New York Art Week – May 2018

Almost two weeks ago, I decided to go on an art scouting trip to New York City during what used to be known as Frieze Art Week. Frieze Art Fair served as the major draw accompanied by maybe one or two satellite fairs. It has now evolved into New York Art Week, with multiple major fairs such as Frieze NY, TEFAF NY, and Art New York leading the scene with a slew of smaller, satellite fairs popping up all over New York. Studio Visit with James Weber

During my recent trip to Armory Arts Week in NYC, I had the pleasure of visiting the studio of noted fashion and fine art photographer, James Weber. The main purpose of my visit was to learn the process of his fine art photography, and what an experience it was! Working with 100+ year old cameras and lenses, James manually develops the film in a darkroom – a process called wet plate collodion. Established in the 1850’s, it requires “pouring a solution collodion onto a plate of thin iron or glass, then placing the plate into a camera and exposing it to the light and, at the end, developing that plate while it is still wet” (Blur Magazine). Armory Arts Week in Review

This past week New York City was host to Armory Arts Week, a convergence of art fairs, museum shows, and a slew of events that revolve around the main fair, The Armory Show. Dealers, collectors, and art enthusiasts trudge all around the city to attend, and I was one such attendee with one very busy itinerary. Despite cold temperatures and nothing short of a blizzard (something this current Floridian is not used to) the trip was a success. Here is my review of Armory Arts Week…

What Happened to ArtPalmBeach?

After a whirlwind trip to Miami for Art Basel Miami Beach, we look forward to our yearly day trip to ArtPalmBeach, an intimate fair consisting of about 85 international galleries dedicated to contemporary, emerging, and modern master works of art. We love coming to this fair because it is so relaxed, and we always find some standout pieces. This year, however, we were stunned at the underwhelming nature of the fair.
We started our day at Galley Biba catching up with Sarah Gates, Director of Gallery Biba. Gallery Biba is located on Worth Avenue, and we are always impressed with their stable of artists and the work on display. Our favorite works from the current exhibition were these intricately gorgeous paintings by artist Jenness Cortez, and of course we could not resist Jonathan Stein’s extravagantly sparkly Bee Mine reservedly priced at $120,000.… Read More
Our Take on Art Basel Miami Beach

Welcome to our new blog. For our first post, we wanted to give you the highlights of our trip to this year’s Art Basel Miami Beach (ABMB), December 2nd-7th.
Some background
It started in Basel, Switzerland in 1970. Art Basel was founded there by Basel gallerists Ernst Beyeler, Trudi Bruckner and Balz Hilt. The show was a success from the start: 90 galleries and 30 publishers from 10 countries exhibited at the inaugural show, attracting 16,300 visitors. In 2014, some 92,000 visitors attended the show over six show days.
Its sister fair, Art Basel Miami Beach (ABMB), has had a similar meteoric rise.
