Japan <3 Auction Results
June 23rd, 2011
On March 11, 2011 a 9.0 magnitude earthquake hit Japan causing an extremely destructive tsunami wave. It is one of the 5 most powerful earthquakes in the world since 1900, and caused loss of life, destruction of infrastructure, and a number of nuclear accidents that released radioactive material into the environment. The overall cost of damage is estimated at $300 billion.
This past Saturday, May 21 2011, a/k/art hosted a Live Art Auction in which 50% of the sale of the artwork went to benefit Japanese Earthquake and Tsunami victims through the Central Florida American Red Cross. The theme of the event was “hope” symbolized by the cherry blossom prevalent on the invite and flyer. Amongst the wreckage and utter despair, the cherry blossom trees have continued to bloom this spring in Japan. The blossoming is a sign of hope that rebirth and reconstruction are on Japan’s horizon, and symbolize the resilience of the Japanese people.
38 works were generously donated by various local and national artists. Of the 38, 31 pieces plus silent auction items were sold raising $3898.00 for the American Red Cross. The event was held at Orange Studios, who graciously donated the space. The key sponsors in making our event extra special were Houlihan’s, Kirby Rentals, Cocktails Catering, Anna Cakes, and Levan’s Catering. Without their generosity our event could not have been such a success.
